Every country has its own iconic alcoholic beverage, such as Scotch whiskey regarded as Scotland’s pride, German dining beer, French Cognac, Russian vodka and Mexican tequila.
There are a large number of local brands of alcoholic beverages in Korea, too. Among those is the most popular liquor brand in Busan with a market share of more than 90 percent. This is C1 or “Clean No. 1” soju, a traditional spirit.
Such higher popularity is ascribed to its mild flavor. C1 aficionados say, “It is smooth to swallow,” and “There is no pain in the stomach,” after drinking it.
The secret comes from a unique form of aging known as the “sound vibration aging process.” Vibrations are sent into the liquid, promoting the mild flavor. In particular, Mozart and jazz is played during the aging stage. The delicate and smooth flavor that “liquor doctors” have developed in the lab is what attracts liquor drinkers.
In particular, the soju maker has launched a new C1 soju brand that is milder than the original as it contains asparagine, an amino acid from plants, and xylitol, a kind of natural sugar. Asparagine eases hangovers, and its addition is a first for Korea. C1 Premium launched in 2007 has been praised as opening a new chapter in the history of the domestic liquor industry.
Since then, the maker has added minerals extracted from waters at the bottom of the sea near Uleung Island, and two kinds of essential amino acids, which ease hangovers and protect the liver.
