Want to go with a group to a seafood buffet for Xmas dinner. Have heard great things about Maris in Jangsan, but Todai's in Seomyeon is more convenient. Cud anyone suggest which is better and/or if it is worth going to Maris above Todai despite it being more incovenient for my friends travelwise?

Thanks
Trevor
Neither. Go to "Oase" in the new Jagalchi building.

I second the emotion.

Maris hands down, especially if you don't like seafood there are lots of other options. Plus in Todai they ration the crab legs out one at a time. The atmosphere sucks as well, cramped tables, blaring music, too bright. . .

Thanks! I'll either go to Oase or Maris...

What's this 'Oase' place? A few more details on what's on offer would be appreciated.

It's the 오아제 Seafood Buffet on the 5th floor of the Jagalchi Fish Market building. Their business card gives a web address of www.oasebusan.co.kr and phone number of 051-248-7777. It's a very nice setting, spacious and modern, with good views. As for the food choices, I was there on a hot day in early summer and really liked the sushi and sashimi, fresh fruits and fruit juices; while my companions especially liked the crab. There were Chinese, Japanese, noodle, dim sum, salad, and dessert areas. There were some Western choices as well; I remember enjoying my first baked potato in nearly a year. The only thing I don't remember, oddly, is Korean; but I think we may assume I overlooked it as I was embracing a nice break from Korean food.

Caveat: I haven't been to Maris or Todai, and therefore can't compare; nor do I have any info on price, as I was a guest. In truth, I'm not really a buffet person; I much prefer quality to quantity. But I can attest that the seafood and atmosphere at Oase both were very nice. That's why I seconded Trevor.

I'll also throw in a vote for Oase. I've been a couple of times and it's pretty solid.

I noticed there is a bar there too...is wine/beer included in the price or extra?

Do they have a grill? The Maris has steaks, small but grilled to order. Definitely would go if they had a red meat option as well. BTW, the Grand Hotel buffet has grilled lamb chops made to order.
Trevor
Thye have a small selection of steaks that you can get them to grill. You might want to stop them before they drown them in sauce. They also have some pretty good pork and some other non-seafood dishes.

So I tried Oase today. It was pretty good but not being a huge seafood fan I personally prefer Maris. Maris has a much better selection of non-seafood dishes. Maris has an actual open fire grill and does really good BBQ stuff (steaks etc), has a much wider and better range of salads, cold cuts, breads, pizzas, burritos and stuff like that as well as some really interesting and much better prepared non-sea food main dishes (snails for example). That said Oase does have, according to my girl friend, a much better selection of fish and seafood - more and better raw fish, raw squid and oysters where the major differences although unlike Maris you are limited to one serving of crab legs at a time (at maris you see people with plates piled 50 high).

As for other things I find the atmosphere and service a lot better at Maris. It was a little hard to get waiters attention for things like more water and a knife (had to ask for that) and they did a pretty poor job of cleaning up the table. Also they closed eveything down at about 2:15, told everyone to get last orders and then started taking all the food away right at 2:30 which was a bit disappointing.
