Another question...if our friend wants to try some Korean food, what's a good restaurant (especially one with something like bulgogi soup or a BBQ place) in the area of Busan Station or Pukyong National University that we could take him to?

Thanks!

What the hell is bulgogi soup? Near Bukyoung University (closer to Kyungsung actually) is a set menu restaurant called Baekdu. This is full course multi-dish tasting of pretty much everything NOT Korean barbecue (which, really you can get anywhere from Busan to Seattle). Baekdu is located near Kyungsung's back gate (across the street from the Hyundai officetel) and very close to the subway. There are two menus, 25,000 won and 35,000 won. I highly recommend starving all day and going for the 35,000 won menu. It's a huge meal though so don't go unless you're famished.
For Korean barbecue, make the extra trip out to Mokjangwon near Taejongdae or Songdo Galbi jib near Songdo beach or there's a really good place on Dalmaji (don't know the name off hand but it might be Dalmaji-jib). The extra trip out will be worth it. Places near Bukyoung cater mostly to students and aren't all that great and places near Busan station are kind of seedy for the most part. Many Koreans might recommend Onyang bulgogi at Kwangalli but I was never impressed by that place.

huh.gif Bulgogi soup:

It's bulgogi cooked in a soup. wink.gif

We actually ended up just around the corner from the Rotiboy that's just north of PNU at a BBQ place that was very good. Yeah, it was very campustowny, but we didn't really care. smile.gif Our friend had never had Korean of any type, so anything was an introduction. He got to try kimchi, soju, and even bondeggi at that restaurant, so we considered it a good deal. smile.gif

How difficult to find a decent Korean restaurant in Korea....^^

The best way to find a good restaurant when you go to a new area is ( I think everybody does this)

to find a place you have to wait a while for the seats rolleyes.gif

I totally agree with Chinese woman. And often these places can be pretty drab looking and unclean! They are often just mom and pop businesses.

Bulgogi soup? I think you are talking about Deokbeggy Bulgogi (sorry no Korean characters on my keyboard). It's a quite sweet cross between a soup and a stew served in a hot bowl. It's good btw!!

I will see if I can tell the next time we have it, which could be tonight for all I care. *drool* I'm not sure that's it, but I could be wrong. unsure.gif

The restaurant's just down from our apartment...wonder if I could talk my husband into it for tonight.... huh.gif

We just got back from that restaurant (pictured above) and on the menu it is called Hanu (the name of the restaurant) Bulgogi Guknaesan.

The weather has turned cold, why not warm your body up by trying some good Korean soup?

Chinese people believe "Dog for summer, Lamb for winter"

Yet, I havent tried any lamb or dog soup in Korea, but I did enjoy lots of other soup.

Usually when you look at the restaurant menu, the ones ended up with "탕"(Tang) are soup.

My favorite includes:

Samgye-Tang 삼계탕(Jinseng Chicken)
Bugeo-Tang 북어탕(Globe fish)
Seoleong-Tang 설렁탕(Beef)
Daegu-Tang 대구탕(Cod fish)
Kamja-Tang 감자탕 (pork backbone and patato)

But keep in mind "목굑탕" is not any soup laugh.gif Enjoy yourself.
