Full Version: Taco Loco (new Mexican Restaraunt)

I just happened to come across a new Mexican restaraunt in Seomyeon that just opened on Wensday. This place is very big and very nice (a lot more than 6 seats). They actually have Mexican cooks, and the korean manager speaks spanish well; he lived in Mexico for 10 years. They also have free chips with 4 different kinds of salsa. The restaraunt is new it just opened on Wensday July 11.

Location: Seomyeon near Judies Toewha. from there find the LG telecom, and it is behind the LG Telecom.

or call 802-4700

What's the menu like? I never go to Seomyeon, but if they enchiladas, I might be tempted. Has anyone tried it?
chevro1et
I am considering checking this place out this weekend, if not before. Will take my digicam and post some pics (including menu) and a quasi-review when I do get there.

Anyone else have a wild goose chase looking for this place? Sorry but the directions either suck or I'm stupid. There are two LG Telecom places right by Judi's Taehwa and I can't for the life of me find the elusive Taco Loco or even understand what "behind" might mean in relation to these places (cuz they're like imbedded in large buildings). I even asked the dude that works at one of them and he had no idea what I was talking about. Ayway, guess I should've written the phone # down. Did anyone else have better luck and if so, can you offer better directions. Thanks.
Devo
Yeah the initial set of directions weren't very helpful. Luckily, I had my Korean lady with me so she phoned them up . . .

Okay, when you are walking down the street after coming out of the #2 exit at the Seomyeon station (the exit that says "Judie's Taewha), walk until you see Judie's buliding on your left. It has the name of the building on the front door and the San Francisco dental clinic is on one of the higher floors, etc.

Now here is where I got messed up. There is a large LG store across the street--do not go there!! This is what I did and I got all screwed up. Instead, take a left and walk down the road that is next to Judie's Taewha. Walk down this road for a little bit (not long), past the outback and the theatre, and you will see an LG store on your right. Take a right. Taco Loco is next to the LG store (kind of behind it I guess). It is big and green. You can't miss it.

Now about the food. Well, considering that it has been ages since I have had Mexican food and that the only other place in Busan that I know of is the little taco shack (not bad by the way . . . is it still there?) down in Haeundae, I have to say that I was so damn happy to be eating real Mexican food again. Of course, you have to forgive them for the lack of quality cheese, and there's also the sad fact that they put honey mustard sauce on the burritos (does anyone know how to say "no f*cking honey mustard sauce!!!!" in Korean?), the food is quite good. The price is a little on the steep side, but they have a deal going now for 15,000 where you get one taco, one burrito, and one quesadilla--and bottomless pop if you order it. The nachos you get to munch on are a great relief from Kimchi, which I hope never to see again, but I have to warn you that there are two colours: the yellow and the brown. The yellow are your normal, corn nachos; however, the brown kind of taste like sweet potato nachos--puke!!

But anyways, this place is great. I am going to be there a lot this next month. Make sure to tell everyone you know because we don't want them to go under like many of the non-Korean restaurants seem to (the Koreans where sipping Tequilla at Taco Loco. I mean God-damn . . .).
unbridled blackcloud
Yeah, I think I know what happened and this goes out to pusan pimp or anyone else giving directions on here: don't use something ubiquitous like an LG Telecom store as a landmark unless you're going to mention other places cuz there's about 2 or 3 LG Telecoms on every block and I'm barely exaggerating. I mean, I don't want to be a total nazi about it and, yeah, you were just trying to be helpful, but my girlfriend and I walked around for about 45 min. looking for the place and ended up settling for TGI's. dry.gif
Dogarse
More directions: If you're on the mainroad facing Judies Daehwa walk down that runs along the right hand side of the building and then take the second right (Kitty corner to Foxy) and the restaurant is 10 metres on your right. Alternatively if you know Cowboy bar, walk out of cowbay and go straight for 20 metres and the restaurant will be on your left.

I ventured out to get a taste of the TL yesterday, just to reiterate the last guys directions are good, the place is around the corner from the LG on the 2nd floor opposite the construction site.

Now about the food, we all ordered the special 1 of each plus either a glass of wine or soda for 15k. The wine was a sweet kinda desert wine which smelled like koolaid. The meal itself was well presented. Taco was do it yourself with 2 small soft shells provided. The burrito did have fresh cilantro in it, but no beans or rice. The quesadilla did have a strange sort of cheese in it which i initially thought was fish due to it's odd texture and taste. Now for my sister's meal, she ordered the vegetable mix for each of her choices and what she got was a pile of white cheesy cream with a tiny amt. of diced carrot and maybe pickle? It was so bad she couldn't even finish, and when she mentioned it to our server (via a Korean) she just got an '. . .oh is that so?' So beware vegetarians!

Overall the meal wasn't bad and the portions were good, I was quite full at the end of the meal. However if this is what 'authentic' Mexican food is then I guess there's really not much to it. There was no hint of any spices used (isn't Mex. supposed to have a little zip?)and each one tasted very similar to the other (despite being different meats). I would have to say that I much prefer my own creations made from recipes off the net or from the guy out in his tiny little taco stand in Haeundae. Maybe he can take over this place when it goes out of business in a few months time. . .
kat
So, was it good?
Or was it good b/c this is Korea and you haven't had mexican in months and your desperate?
Honey Mustard sauce pretty much confirms my worst fears about this restaurant. Has anyone else been there that can provide any more hope for decent mexican?
(Tacos in haeundae are freaking awesome, but I would say thats texmex)
Devo
Don't let the honey mustard thing scare you too much. For some reason, they only put it on my burrito and nothing else--and even then it was just a little bit. I only had one of the many dishes mind you, and what I had was great. I am no Mexican food expert, but it seemed pretty close to authentic, or it was a damn good clone nonetheless. The menu is massive so there is a LOT to chose from as well.

The guacamole is fantastic (that alone should make you want to go) and they give you one other hot, green sauce, and two other kinds of salsa with your meal. The taco, burrito, and quesadilla shells are, well, normal. The meat is well-seasoned and quite tasty, and the presentation is quite nice too.

Of course, I need to go back with a bunch of people and order something else to give it a better review, but so far I have to say that it is excellent. Definitely go and give it a try.

This should get you there:

You can also exit the subway station, remaining underground, and walk by all the fashion/clothing shops in the underground market, then at the end of that line go up the stairs on the left and you're on the correct corner.

Now, about the food, I don't know too much about what makes Authentic Mexican Cuisine and what makes Inauthentic Mexican Cuisine, but I liked this. Either I didn't get those infamous brown nachos or they were a shade too similar to differentiate, but they all tasted nacho-ey enough. It is a fairly large dining room (on the second floor of the building), with many seats and a bar. Only real mishap was I said cola and they heard Corona. They replaced it with cola and didn't charge me for the Corona (even though they'd opened it). Can confirm, they do swirl a bit of honey mustard sauce across the top of the burrito, but it wasn't overly much and I was able to scrape most of it off.

Also, since it's not immediately visible from most seats in the room, the restrooms are directly behind the bar, near the entrance.

Just came back from a feasting! It's above average in quality for Korean foreign food standard. I had the tortilla soup for 4000 won and it was pretty good. Then I tried the combination plate and sampled a burrito, taco and quesadilla for 15,000 won and found it to be filling and delicious. They used real queso instead of Monterrey jack. That's the strange texture by the way. They included cilantro in the burrito and that was a nice touch. And, having had authentic Mexican food in Mexico, I would say that the food was pretty close to the mark. They offer a hot chilles sauce made from real pulverized chilles (it's hot) and they serve seared chilles with the meal for those who want heat. I wasn't too fond of the honey mustard stuff myself, but I just pushed it aside and went for the pico de gallo. The Pastor meat was the real deal. The wait staff was attentive and courteous. The portions were acceptable and they offered refills on cola. If I were to compare it to other Mexican restaurants in North America I'd give it a 6 out of 10. For Korea, I'd give it a 9/10.

Keep these guys in business and visit there often.

I went there for dinner tonight. Overall I enjoyed it. The chips you get are flour tortillas cut and deep fried - pretty greasy. As someone else mentioned, the four kinds of dips are good, though. There are two hot ones: a diced green pepper one and a brown one which I'd call chipotle salsa at home, made with smoked jalapenos. The other two dips were guacamole and a regular "house" (diced tomato and onion, mild) salsa. All tasted fresh and homemade, they didn't dump these out of a bottle or can. The chips, salsa, and soda refills were free and the waitstaff were very on top of keeping them coming.

I ordered a veggie burrito and a Mexican salad. The salad was shredded cabbage, lettuce, a few other token leafy greens, and fresh and dried fruit. Honey mustard dressing came with it (I wasn't offered a choice). Not sure what made it "Mexican" but it was a nice salad.

The burrito plate came with two fresh jalapeno peppers and a slice of grilled onion. The burritos were two small burritos in flour tortillas, crisscrossed with the ubiquitous honey-mustard dressing on the outside. It looked pretty but made them impossible to pick up and eat so I had to use a knife and fork (to eat a burrito)! Inside were sliced carrots with a little zucchini and some white shredded cheese that I couldn't identify. That was it. No cilantro anywhere in sight. I ended up using the guacamole and chipotle for the chips on the burritos.

Disclaimer: I'm not Mexican but I grew up on the Mexico-U.S. border and I'm very familiar with Mexican, and Mexican-American, food. Taco Loco a good break from Korean food but if you're looking for actual Mexican or even Tex-Mex this isn't it. It's more like "fusion" with a light Mexican theme, I guess is the best way I can put it. The presentation was lovely and the restaurant was large and nicely decorated. They're definitely going for an upscale look. The portions were good (I loved the endless chips-salsa-and-soda) and the prices were fine for the food and setting. It's a very nice place for a good sit-down meal. For a meal-sized burrito dripping with guac, sour cream, and cilantro that I can pick up with my hands and eat, I'll still head to Tacos al Puebla in Haeundae.

I will be going there this weekend, but the reviews people are giving seem contradictory.
I will also attempt to talk to these Mexican cooks and see what's up, and have a long conversation in Spanish with the manager...

but honey mustard? just hearing about that is enough to postpone it till the weekend, instead of rushing away to try is as soon as I read the posts about it- as I did with Taco al Puebla in Haeundae..

I also seriously doubt that there is a Mexican citizen on the planet that would ever even consider serving Mexican food without beans and rice.

I went there a couple of nights ago. The restaurant does have a nice ambience. For 20 000 won you can get a a good meal. I got the burrito/taco/quesadilla combo and tortilla soup. I am a big eater but the I found the food filling. The honey mustard seems kinda silly but then again the restaurant's target costumers (Koreans) like that stuff. I'll definitely go back as long as it stays open.

3.5/5 stars... food
5/5 stars... service
3/5 stars... price

I know how you feel, I was sick of places deciding what should go on my burger/hot dog/sandwich smothering it in sauce and piling every weird vegetable/sugar/fruit combination they could think of, without asking me what I wanted. When I finally learnt how to ask for stuff not to be added they looked at me as though I was some kind of weirdo...I could see it in their eyes "Strange foreigner, it's free, why wouldn't you want sugar, salt, ketchup, go chu jang and mango on your hot dog??"

so here it is 4 very important words required to enjoy your food in Korea...

(food name) 빼주세요 Bae Ju Se Yo

Bae is the verb, to remove or to leave out.

If you can see the thing being made before you, such as in Subway/Quiznos or Steffs Hot Dog. You can ask for only certain things to be put in with this simple phrase.

(food name) 만 주세요 Man Ju Se Yo

e.g 양파만 주세요 Onions only please.

(I hope that is all correct, any Koreans feel free to correct if I've made any mistakes)

correction:

Hangug-e-isang-han-sosu-be-ju-seyo. na-nun-chogo-chincha-shilta!

they will comprehend your mind perfectly with this phrase.

I said Koreans feel free to translate. You're not Korean Ewok!

Just kidding, but could you write that out in Hangeul script as well, romanization does my head in.

I stumbled onto this place last Sunday. Their were 4 of us and we sampled a couple of different things. I had the combo Fajhitas. Great... The best I have had here in Korea. We also had the combo plate. Not bad. and The Buritos not bad. Tex mex it's not, but not a bad fusion thing. I rank it a little above Terra the mexican place near PNU that went out of business a few years ago. If only because of the Fajhitas. For tacos and Burittos though Taco Chilie chilies is better. The service was a shad above terrible but that is true of most new places here and hopefully they will get better fast. The sauces were good but Honey mustard??? What were they thinking. They had free wine ( if you could call it that ) and Sangria when we went there as well. Not the best place but I will go again...

Another positive experience for this place. Went there last night, spur of the moment decision with some friends. Everyone was quite satisfied with the quality and portion size, service was fairly speedy (although we were the only table in there at the time), wait staff was competent, sour cream provided upon request. I won't say if I think if its better or worse than Won Tae's stand in Haeundae, its different. Prices are higher, but it is much more of a 'dining experience'. Absence of rice and beans will hopefully be resolved. No honey-mustard sauce in sight (maybe someone else resolved this issue?). Guacamole was really nice, and the home-made style salsa was really tasty as well. We all agreed that we would certainly eat there again. Additionally, I noticed that they had a promotional truck driving around Seomyeon with banners, blasting mariachi music, and some people dressed up in Mexican-themed costumes passing out flyers/ take-out menus around the area of the restaurant as well.

Well, I finally made it there. In no particular order, here are the highlights:

No honey mustard.
Well seasoned chicken quesadillas.
Good service.
Ricky Martin was put on after about 5 minutes of horrendous Korean "trot".
cilantro.
properly seasoned beef and pork- strange seafood quesadilla.
superb fresh corn tortillas.
steep price, but did not leave hungry.
The mexican cooks were knowledgeable, and do their best to preserve the 'mexicanness' in the food.
the owner does NOT speak spanish.

All in all, it was a good experience. It is definitely more upscale than the haeundae taco stand, but I believe that comparing the two is a bit like apples and oranges.

will keep going back there often. (as long as they don't go out of business as all non-Korean restaurants tend to in the land of the inbred palate.)
Greekfreak
Went there yesterday with a large group of people, and can honestly say the following:

Expensive, but delicious beef fajitas. Just a couple thousand won cheaper than tgif or Outback, however they used real corn tortillas, not pita bread--always a plus.

the service; accomodating, but incompetent. This is standard in Korea, so I'm never surprised, but on top of that, we had an especially large amount of people, so I don't blame them for this. It's par for the course.

They gave a crushed pepper dip as one of 4 nacho dips, along with guacamole (hate it, never bothered to try it), a weak salsa (possibly homemade), and one other kind, and the pepper dip was fabulous for those who like spicy stuff. I bought a jar of it for 5,000 off them, but with no MSG, you'll have to freeze most of it unless you've got a stomach made of steel and can eat the whole thing in one sitting.

I would go again, but I doubt the whole menu is as good. However, they've got authentic Mexican chefs (along with a few Koreans) in the kitchen, so as long is they're in there, the chances of quality control are pretty good.
Greekfreak
Went back there last night; ordered the same meal and walked away unimpressed; the wife ordered what appeared to be hardshell chicken tacos, but were given to her with soft shells. Both meals were bland as all hell, and the service was non-existant.

I give it until Christmas. Inconsistancy will kill a restaurant faster than any H-bomb. See the "Shabana" thread for similar views.

Went there a few days ago. Had the 15,000 combo (burrito, quesadilla, taco) which was quite good. A little pricey, but a nice change.

The place is much too big. It's hard to see how they will stay in business.
lolita
umm..when i got there..it was empty..only 3 people were waiting for their food..

i enjoyed the burriot..quite nice but not that big as that price..
.. my koreans went with me didn't like the whole meal..after that they went to po-jang-ma-cha and crabbed a lot of tanbora and fried things...

honstly..
the taste was ok there..but not cheap..
not so many people as the other places in seomyon..very nice..
the service was a lil bit slow...though it was empty..we waited almost 30 mins..
the "wine" tasted like grape juice..ummm...

I was ready to hate this place...I've walked by it for months, surprised to see it still open. I finally went it...attracted by the 9,000 won combo advert on the window.
Of course, in true Korean style, the combo deal is over and no one had taken the sign down. I was ready to walk out, but we were there already...and the waitress broght the salsas.
I was really glad we stayed. We hit em back with some Korean style of our own, ordering one dish and splitting the combo fajitas, which was something like 16,000. It was all very good, the salsas included.
This place is perfect for drinking in a quiet place with a friend. I could totally see myself going in there on a Saturday afternoon. The Korean beer on tap is 7,000 for a 1700cc pitcher, which is as reasonable as you'll find at a bar. I'd much rather have fajitas as anju than 14,000 kimche soup. This is a bar as far as I'm concerned. I'm from California and pretty discerning in my Mexican food tates...this place is really not bad for Korea. It would be pasable in California. There's just no beans or rice.

I was there last weekend and also had the Fajhitas. Beer was good too. I will go again for sure. Why is the place so damn big though? I just can't see them lasting...

Went last night. Seems the menu has been changed a little. There's now a lot more stuff on the lunch menu with an average price of 4900won/dish. Lunch runs from 12-4.
busanfoodguy
I thought that I should mention the lunch menu specials. Large portions at a cheap price! 4,500 - 5,500 won.
Your choice of two spaghetti dishes or four Mexican dishes.

I went at the urging of the Spanish language teacher of our school. She goes weekly to chat with the two Mexican chefs.
Her opinion is that the food is authentic, but altered due to having to buy local substitutes.

(I tried the chiles rellenos, and although the dish was authentically made, it tastes too different from the Mexican version since the
chefs have to use sweet bell peppers instead of chili-poblanos.

I recommend the chilequiles plate. This is a flour tortilla, torn into strips and sauted with chile salsa, cream, and cheese.
Then, they put a steak on top! You can ask for it spicy.

I was surprised at the size of the portions, and with the extras of the meal. Good chips, good salsas and avocado dip.

Is this place still open? I might check them out this weekend.

I thought that it had closed, but haven't been able to verify it visually.

If it has, you could always check out the Taco shop in Haeundae. Great food and he always appreciates the business. Check out the original thread for directions and more information

I just got off the phone with the owner.

The place is still there and in business. I'm going there tonight.

I suggest that people find out what is really going on before they dissuade people from going there by saying it's closed, over , and done.

Well I am glad to know that someone had talked to them because it certainly looked like it was closed last time I was by there. After going there will you let us know the full story? What I mean is if this temporary closure was just for vacation, remodeling or something else.
