After a fairly long break, due to a broken projector, Vinyl Underground's Movie Night is set to make a return tomorrow, Tuesday October 16.

The re-opening movie is going to be 24 Hour Party People (2002) http://imdb.com/title/tt0274309/

Shown at PIFF in 2003 this true story, charts the rise and fall of the short lived, but extremely influential Manchester music scene from the 70's to the 90's. If you like music from bands such as Joy Division, New Order, The Buzzcocks, Happy Mondays etc. check it out.

Start time should be around 8:30.

Wherever possible, movies will be shown with Korean subtitles. This weeks movie will have Korean subtitles.

The aim of the original movie night was to give people the opportunity to see movies on a big screen that you normally wouldn't find in your local cinema, or cult classics.

As an example, past movies have included.

Battle Royal
Withnail and I
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Run Lola Run
Big Lebowski
Donnie Darko
Blues Brothers
Commitments
Trainspotting
American Werewolf in London
Spinal Tap
Meet the Feebles.

Hopefully from that list you will get an idea of the sort of movies we tried to show, and any further suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

I don't know if these movies fit in with the existing list but they are movies that have stayed with me in memory over the years

Mosquito Coast, starring Harrison Ford
Time Bandits, starring the Monty Python crew
Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman
Heaven Can Wait, starring Warren Beatty
Groundhog Day, Bill Murray

Yes, every Tuesday.

The aim of movie night is to show movies from all countries that you wouldn't normally get a chance to see here. I do intend on showing some Korean movies in the near future, any suggestions will be welcome.

We are trying something new this week and going with a documentary.

This weeks Vinyl Movie is 'Jesus Camp'

http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/jesu...?q=jesus%20camp
http://imdb.com/title/tt0486358/

A growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles in advocating the causes of their religious movement. This documentary, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, directors of the critically acclaimed "The Boys of Baraka," follows Levi, Rachael, and Tory to Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire" summer camp in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, where kids as young as 6 years-old are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in "God's army." (Magnolia Pictures)

This documentary is a must watch for everyone, regardless of your faith or beliefs. An outstanding piece of film making.

Apologies to any Korean readers/viewers, but there are no Korean subtitles for this movie, although I could show it with English subtitles if there was a demand.

Start time around 8:45

It was a pretty good/chilled night, but I was dissapointed a bit with this film sad.gif Nothing to do with the night and I'm glad I was able to watch it, and I didn't make recomendations as I wanted to see something I haven't seen before. smile.gif

Where do the films come from? Is it just punters coming in with something or is there a Vynil library of movies?

What did other people think of it?

Personally it didn't give me anything new I didn't know and the characters were a bit too 2 dimensional, still I enjoy being reinforced that orgenised religion is wrong. Even though both sides have valid points.

Maybe that is why they said it is a documentary...

Thanks for coming down first of all. For the most part it's been yours humbly who has picked the majority of the movies, or at least taken the trouble to download them and check quality etc.

As I said before I am willing to take any suggestions, but do avoid mainstream movies unless they have become cult classics.

I Plan to go back to a regular old movie this coming week. I was considering the Australian movie 'Chopper', which stars Eric Bana in one of his first major rolls. (If you hated him in Troy, you should really see this movie, because he excels). I need to quickly preview it, just to double check I think it is as good as I remember it.

As always any further suggestions welcome.

Chinesewoman, if you want to see how a documentary is to be made check out 'King of Kong'. Best doco ever biggrin.gif I even have a copy if people need to be exposed to it.

I think Chopper is probably the only movie with Eric Bana I'm willing to see. Nobody agrees with me, but I really don't rate him as a good actor, more of 'character' actor. I did like his old comedy stuff back in the day. I doubt it aged well, and unlike 90% of Australia I didn't much care for the castle sad.gif

Ranting away like the way I did I'm totally down to see Chopper wink.gif

Yep, 'Chopper' is this weeks movie.

It's the dramatization of the true life story of Mark 'Chopper' Read. An notorious Australian criminal and media bad boy, who went on to become a best selling author.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/chopper/

http://imdb.com/title/tt0221073/

http://www.metacritic.com/video/titles/chopper?q=chopper

Eric Bana's performance is riveting. It seems his agent has let him down somewhat since he hit it big in Hollywood.

I am pretty certain there will be Korean subtitles for this one. (just need to check the syncing)

Cool, that's what I was telling some friends. Can we start at 9? I'm bringing a friend who's new to Busan, and she finishes work at 8.30 sad.gif If not, that's cool majority rules wink.gif With luck we could probably make it just on time from Gaegum smile.gif

I suggest The Idiots by Lars von Trier, if you haven't shown it before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Idiots

Definitely not one you normally find at your local cinema, and is an interesting film to debate, if thats your thing. I have seen it but would definitely watch it again.

I find Lars von Trier an acquired taste. For those who don't know him he did Dogville with Nicole Kidman, and that Musical with Bjork whose name escapes me, but got all sorts of praise in Cannes.

I find his films difficult to watch, but anyone who wants to challenge themselves in movie watching, I recomend exposing themselves to it.

For easy watching I also have a copy of 'Teach me English' with english subtitles. It's a Korean film. To me it looks like a Korean take of an 'Amelie' type film. It's really cute.

I also have a really good Hungarian film called 'Kontroll' with english subtitles. The director went on to Hollywood (Very well deserved IMO), but his first effort 'Vacancy' was a horrible film.

I also want to to see a Korean cartoon called 'Empress Chung' in english. I don't know much about it, so it might be waaaay to childish for this event, but the only Korean animator I know here is an awesome dude, but is not a big fan of Korean Animation to say the least.

As a geek I'm up for all sorts of animation, except for anything by Maomiri Oishii's (Ghost in the shell, Jihnro) and I've seen 'Appleseed', and it offended me with uglyness (both new and old versions)

BTW I reckon more people should post up suggestions and requests smile.gif I can't be the only geek Busan. I know I'm not tongue.gif

The movie is only 94 mins long, so should be able to start around 9.

Contary to my previous announcement, it turns out that my Korean subtitles are in fact German! So if your friend is Korean, I apologise.

I will do my best to find some, but I know that if cineast doesn't have them, probably nowhere will.

It was allright tonight. I'm a lot more fond of Australian things while away from Australia smile.gif I found some of my friends had a hard time understanding the film. I know there was a lot of slang in it, but many of you guys agree?

For next week I want to lighten things up and show a comedy of some sort.

One idea I had, and it depends on how many people have already seen it, is "Hot Fuzz", from the same team who brought you the modern classic "Shawn of the Dead". I personally haven't seen it, but given their previous efforts and tv work, it's probably a sure thing.

As usual if you have any other ideas please let me know.

I will see what I can do on this.

On a similar note, I am desperately trying to find English subtitles for the 1975 Korean anime classic Robot TaeKwon V. If I get them it's a must show for movie night. The film was digitally restored and remastered last year at a cost of billions of dollars to the Korean film industry. We were fortunate enough to see the premiere at last years PIFF and not only had they done an excellent job restoring, the film itself was excellent fun.

It was a really good film. I thought everyone has seen this though. I'll watch it again if no one else has smile.gif Not being much of a Zombie movie fan, I was a bit ho-hum with Shawn of the dead. Hot Fuzz was money though smile.gif

I'll see what I can do abot Robot Taekwon V. On fridays I go life drawing with a bunch of Animation students. Maybe after 5 weeks this will be the Ice breaker that will get me started talking to them. Should I assume they speak English?

Matt.

Can I recommend some Chinese movies?

I am not a real movie-buff, but still, good movies are forceful ...

Here one I want to recommend is <Farewell My Concubine>

Directed by Chen Kaige, costared by Gong Li and Leslie Cheung.

This is the best movie ever I think in China, the story telling, making up, music, cultural and historical value...I rank it 7 stars for each aspect.

It is about Art, History, Love, Gay, Chinese traditional opera...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106332/maindetails

rolleyes.gif Good movies always deserve strong recommendation.

I have the DVDs, if people want to watch, I could bring it to Vinyl this Saturday night when I go there.

Movie night is 4 weeks in now and attendances have been surprisingly ok, a few more would be cool.

Was talking to friends last night, including some who attend movie night pretty regularly and we were saying that once a month show a cult classic that everyone knows and hopefully likes, even movies that were shown in the previous incarnation of movie night, The Big Lebowski and The Blues Brothers were suggested last night, can be shown. Personally I would love to show Battle Royale again, which still remains the most popular movie (in terms of thumbs up) shown at movie night.

Starting this week with Dr. Strangelove (see the next post for more details)

The other idea that I have was to show some more Korean movies. I was surprised that the majority of people at our table hadn't seen 친구 Chingu (Friend). The first movie I saw in Korea and still one of the best. Not only is it set in Busan (so you can have fun trying to spot filming locations, the nightclub that features has a plaque up now!), the film also skips, for the most part, over sentimentality and melodrama that plagues Korean movies.

Other weeks can be used to show the more obscure movies and the like.

This weeks movie will be Dr.Strangelove, to commemorate Remembrance Day tomorrow.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0057012/ 8.7
http://www.metacritic.com/video/titles/drstrangelove 96!
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dr_strangelove/ 100!!

If you haven't seen it, you really should.
