You really don't want to miss this people. A night full of sketch comedy that is about your life; written and performed by locals!

Tickets are a bit more than a movie (which you'll see there as well) for a chance to support some art stuff.

do it!

7Gs
This friday and saturday in Gwangali ...starting at 10!!!

I'm sorry. I do not think I could bring myself to attend an event called "Babopalooza" no matter what it was.

That name just does not appeal. At all.

I sat through half a rehersal tonight, and from what I saw, I gotta say that I think you'll be missing out. They're freaking funny!

Bert,

Would you go if it was called "incredibly-awesome-insanely-hilarious-laser-beam-explosion-waterslide-roller-coaster-fun-house-food-fight-carnival-laugh-out-loud-magic-well-being-extravaganza?"

Would ya? Would ya?

'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' wasnt exactly the best name for the often regarded "best album ever" throne...not saying this show is Shakespeare, but you you shouldnt judge something by its name. Its just a bunch of waygooks and koreans who worked hard on a few pieces just making fun of some of the oddities of both expats and koreans. Come along and judge for yourself. The Busan web forums even get a mention!!!

The point was you said you wouldn't go based on the name alone. I think he's trying to figure out what kind of name would draw you.

If you ask me that is a perfectly legitimate consumer decision.

Titles are often indicative of content, just as I would not watch a TV programme with a title like "Love in Harvard" I similarly would not go to a sketch show called "Babopalooza".

Sorry if my rationale offends your Busan ex-pat camaraderie.

I told the directors to name it "Titties, Beer, and the Achievements of Globalization in the 20th Century", but they thought it didn't exactly convey the right message.

Out of curiousity Bert, what would YOU name an expat written, expat performed, comedy sketch festival?

Fair enough, I came up with it. I can identify with you. I only read Dickens once I was forced to. I thought his titles chewed stool.

But you're right, the lack of appeal may come from the fact that it hits a little too close to home for you.

Most folks have been really receptive, and advance tickets have been selling quite well. But the other night, while pimping the show and handing out flyers, I got my fair share of skidmarks rolling their eyes and telling me, "okay, say something funny then." I told them that I don't do freebies. I can't tell you how many time boring people have shot me that line when they found out I was a comedian. So tired. I suppose I should have a killer line for that one, but it's so annoying I don't even bother. I've never heard someone demand that a guitarist play a solo for them while promoting his upcoming concert.

I don't expect everyone to turn up, which is good, as there isn't room for an overwhelming turnout. What I will say is that I'd wager this is the first time foreigners have put to together a full-on original comedy show in Korea ever, and I'd know I'd be keen to go even if I had no connection with the gig. I'd figure even if the show sucked it would be entertaining to watch them fail.

I did comedy for years back home, and despite the fact that this show was thrown together by teachers here of wildy different levels of experience and backgrounds in comedy, I think it's gonna be a really funny night. There are some bits that kill me every time, despite the fact that I've seen them scores of times...

My wife and I bought tickets for the Friday night show, and I also think the title is lame. But I'm hoping the show isn't as unoriginal as the title.

It's one of those rare times I actually subsidize the 'artistic' community, and I will reserve full judgement until after the show.

In the meantime, Bert is Evil: evidence... plus one of my favourite pictures ever.

POM said: I can't tell you how many time boring people have shot me that line when they found out I was a comedian. So tired. I suppose I should have a killer line for that one, but it's so annoying I don't even bother.

When someone asks you to say something funny, the standard response is "Your face!" and then laugh like you just escaped from a lunatic asylum. Yes, I believe that IS the correct course of action.

Oh, and you get extra humor points if your answer is directed to a beautiful woman/handsome man. I dunno, just works that way.

My sense of humour is intact and all-encompassing, although I will say that delivery is the key.

It helps for people to have a sense of ridiculousness about themselves and the arrogance that comes with being a 'comedian'. Big difference between able to make people laugh and being witty.

Don Rickles is/was a genius comedian. Richard Pryor was witty and a genius. Sam Kinison was both. Dice was funny when I was 15, and so tastes change as well as comedians. I can only hope the people on stage have fun with it. Don't be nervous--anybody who's worked successfully in a hogwon knows a little about performing.

I really just wanted to comment about POM's avatar, but I'll contribute to the thread to keep from being tossed into the "Much ado" thread.....again:

Babopalooza sounds like fun. Can't wait to see my buddies Igs and tarantula..

Ok, POM great avatar, but I think you copped that out of an edition of The Stranger circa 1995, didn't ya? Shot taken at the Offramp, perhaps??

So I think for the first time, we all saw all of the sketches last night.

Trust me folks, it is good....trust me....GOOOOOD! It runs the whole gamet of humour as far as I'm concerned and I know for a fact that, If I would be watching it, there'd be at LEAST several moments in each sketch where I could laugh out loud.

get your tickets!

just so you know:
facing the ocean..turn RIGHT and walk along the beach road.
Keep going for quite a ways. You'll pass some apartments along the road...walk past. There are a couple of hwe restaurants around the theatre. In fact, the "Beach Town Bar" is on the 4th floor of the theatre building (a hwe restaurant on the first floor).

You will recognize the theatre door by the BLUE! the door itself isn't blue (I don't think) but this structure that the door is ON is blue..

It will make sense when you see it.

Hahaha... The Offramp, good gawd. Could've been me after a couple Gits/7 Year Bitch shows there in the day.

I found the avatar online, though it may have been in The Stranger at one point, but I don't remember, as the mid 90's are more of an impression than an memory for me at this point.

Friday was sold out. If you dont have a ticket for Saturday you may have to wait in line. We had to refuse entry to friends of tarantulas which really hurt. The whole show went down well. Was a great atmosphere.
